Alex Pereira Is Chasing a Historic Third UFC Title, And He Has Every Chance to Rewrite History

When Brazilian kickboxing sensation Alex Pereira (13-3) made his full transition to MMA and signed with the UFC, few could have predicted he would reach comparable heights in mixed martial arts. The distinct demands of MMA, particularly the crucial roles of wrestling and grappling, often pose significant challenges even for legendary strikers. Yet, even among his most ardent supporters, hardly anyone dared to imagine that Pereira could become the first fighter in the promotion’s history to claim titles in three different weight classes.

Alex Pereira’s UFC Journey

Leveraging his star power from kickboxing upon his UFC debut in November 2021, Pereira swiftly earned a title shot after just three victories. This expedited path was largely due to the narrative goldmine presented by then-champion Israel Adesanya, whom Pereira had defeated twice in their kickboxing careers—a rivalry Dana White and the UFC brass couldn’t afford to ignore.

In November 2022, despite the fight largely going Adesanya’s way, Pereira’s formidable striking power ultimately prevailed in the fifth and final round, leading to a TKO victory and crowning him the new UFC Middleweight Champion.

After Adesanya finally overcame Pereira in their fourth encounter, stopping him in the second round in April 2023, the Brazilian made the long-anticipated decision to move up to light heavyweight. By November of the same year, he claimed the vacant divisional title, defeating Jiří Procházka. Having secured two belts in record time, Pereira now sets his sights on an even greater challenge: the heavyweight division.

Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane: Battle for the Interim UFC Heavyweight Title

The conquest of an unprecedented historical feat—a third UFC divisional title—could be just one victory away for Alex Pereira. On June 14, in the co-main event of UFC White House, also known as UFC Freedom 250, Pereira is set to make his heavyweight debut (up to 120.2 kg / 265 lbs) against French three-time title challenger Ciryl Gane (13-2) for the vacant interim championship belt.

This interim title was introduced following an injury to the undisputed champion, Tom Aspinall. With no clear timeline for Aspinall’s return after eye surgery, there’s a strong possibility that the winner of the Pereira-Gane bout could be elevated to undisputed champion status if Aspinall’s recovery is prolonged. Furthermore, rumors suggesting that UFC officials have pressured Aspinall to voluntarily relinquish his title might not be without foundation.

Pereira vs. Gane: An Ideal Matchup for Alex?

Regardless of the title’s ultimate status, Pereira must first overcome Ciryl Gane, a task that is far from easy. However, Alex’s compatriot and former heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos, believes this matchup is nearly ideal for him.

“For Alex’s heavyweight debut, you couldn’t imagine a better fight,” Dos Santos stated. “Ciryl Gane will be a serious test because he’s very fast and technical for a heavyweight. But I think Alex’s style will confuse him. Pereira consistently fights aggressively, expertly cuts angles, moves circularly, and gradually breaks down his opponents. Gane doesn’t possess heavyweight knockout power, but Alex does. I believe Alex will win.”

Betting Odds for Pereira vs. Gane

While dos Santos’s analysis holds merit, current betting odds suggest a different outlook. Following the official announcement of the bout, oddsmakers have positioned Gane as the favorite, with odds typically around 1.56, while Pereira is listed as the underdog, with odds hovering around 2.55.

A move to a new weight class always introduces an element of uncertainty. It’s possible that Alex might be biting off more than he can chew. However, it’s equally plausible that Pereira will find his ultimate comfort and unleash his renowned power to its fullest extent in the heavyweight division.
