Archie Colgan is highly confident that his next opponent will be lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Colgan recently secured his position as the number one contender by winning a fight explicitly designated as a title eliminator, which he says was precisely what he was informed of beforehand.
This situation has caused apparent dissatisfaction for Paul Hughes, who lost a close majority decision to Nurmagomedov earlier this year and has been vocal about wanting a rematch. Upon the initial announcement of Colgan`s contender fight with title implications, Hughes reacted critically on social media.
However, Colgan is steadfast in his belief that he has now earned the right to challenge Nurmagomedov after his dominant performance in the contender bout. He argues that the promotion`s clear labeling of his recent fight leaves no room for ambiguity regarding the next title shot.
While understanding Hughes` disappointment, particularly after Hughes` own quick victory in his most recent outing, Colgan maintains that Hughes had his chance against Nurmagomedov previously and came up just short. Colgan highlights his own impressive 12-0 undefeated record and consistent rise as justification for receiving this next opportunity.
“No shade against Paul Hughes,” Colgan stated, acknowledging him as a skilled fighter. He reiterated his view: “I think Paul Hughes had his opportunity and he put on a great fight… That was his opportunity at the time. I think that I am due that next opportunity. I don’t plan on coming up short.”
Colgan also pointed out a significant difference he brings compared to Hughes in a potential clash with Nurmagomedov: wrestling. While Hughes showed strong defensive grappling against the champion, Colgan, a former high-level wrestler from the University of Wyoming, poses a substantial offensive threat.
Colgan elaborated that he not only expects to make Nurmagomedov work hard for takedowns but is also confident in his ability to take the champion down himself. He believes Nurmagomedov has not faced someone who can put him on his back and force him to fight from that position or constantly defend offensive wrestling. Colgan is prepared for Nurmagomedov`s attacks but is equally ready to impose his own grappling game.
Although PFL has not yet officially scheduled the bout, Colgan anticipates the title fight against Usman Nurmagomedov will likely take place around October or November.
If he becomes champion, Colgan is open to facing other contenders, including a potential rematch with Paul Hughes or emerging fighters like the upcoming tournament winner, such as Gadzhi Rabadanov. But for now, his focus is squarely on the earned title shot against Nurmagomedov.
