Carlos Ulberg’s Incredible UFC Title Victory Amidst Torn ACL and Tibia Damage

New UFC light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg faces a significant layoff following his championship win at UFC 327. Despite suffering a torn ACL and tibia damage during his first-round knockout victory over Jiri Prochazka, Ulberg displayed remarkable resilience to secure the vacant 205-pound title.

During the fight, Ulberg visibly struggled with his leg, showing signs of imbalance and difficulty putting weight on it after an injury sustained from Prochazka. However, with Prochazka unable to capitalize on the situation, Ulberg managed to land a surprising offensive, knocking down his opponent and finishing him with ground and pound to claim the championship on one leg.

Ulberg underwent knee surgery recently, as confirmed by his social media posts. His manager, Ash Belcastro, further elaborated to Ariel Helwani that Ulberg indeed tore his ACL during the bout. The surgery, performed yesterday, was reported to be successful. Belcastro also revealed that fighting with a torn ACL resulted in tibia damage and bone bruising, but Ulberg is reportedly committed to a swift recovery.

The recovery timeline for a torn ACL typically ranges from six to nine months, with competitive athletes often advised to take additional time before returning to action. Given Ulberg’s current condition and the need for proper rehabilitation, his return to the octagon is anticipated sometime next year. In the interim, the UFC may consider organizing an interim light heavyweight title bout to maintain momentum in the division.
