Daniel Zellhuber Makes a Bold Promise After Stunning Upset Loss at UFC 318

Rising UFC lightweight contender Daniel Zellhuber faced a significant upset defeat at UFC 318, marking a surprising turn in his promising career.

Veteran fighter Michael Johnson, once a rival of Dustin Poirier, delivered a surprising performance at UFC 318, upsetting Daniel Zellhuber in a main card bout. The 39-year-old Johnson secured his third consecutive victory, demonstrating a clear speed advantage over the larger Zellhuber.

This loss was a considerable setback for Zellhuber, who had gained prominence after his previous bout at UFC 306 was considered a `Fight of the Year` candidate. In this fight, Zellhuber appeared reluctant to engage, largely relying on kicks throughout the three rounds against the experienced Johnson.

Following his defeat by Johnson, Zellhuber`s future standing in the UFC may be uncertain for his upcoming fight.

Daniel Zellhuber Promises to Be `Best in the World` Despite Major Setback at UFC 318

Zellhuber is among several talents from Dana White’s Contender Series who have established themselves in the UFC. Notable alumni like Jamahal Hill and Sean O’Malley have even gone on to win UFC championships after securing contracts through the show.

However, Zellhuber, after experiencing his second consecutive loss at UFC 318, has expressed even loftier ambitions.

Breaking his silence on social media after UFC 318, Zellhuber shared a message on his Instagram story.

“My goal remains unchanged,” Zellhuber stated. “The start of this journey might not be the most joyous, but I assure you, I will become the best in the world, because I am fully aware of the effort I invest daily.”

He added, “I apologize to everyone who consistently supports me; I will return stronger and improved. I thank those who stick by me, and even those who leave, as they help me discern who truly belongs in my circle.”

Concluding, Zellhuber said, “All glory to God, who continually affirms that I can give more and that this is my true calling in life. We will come back better. Thank you all.”

Zellhuber secured a UFC contract in 2021 via DWCS. His debut in September 2022 ended in a loss to Trey Ogden. However, he then went on a three-fight winning streak, defeating Lando Vannata, Francisco Prado, and Christos Giagos, prior to his current challenges.

Considering Zellhuber’s 6’1″ stature, a move to a different weight class after UFC 318 might be an option. However, as of now, he has not indicated any intention to move up to welterweight.

UFC Star Accused Max Holloway of `Pulling Back` Punches on Dustin Poirier

During the UFC 318 main event, Max Holloway successfully defended his BMF title against Dustin Poirier, who was competing in his retirement bout. However, a former UFC champion claimed that Holloway intentionally eased off Poirier, suggesting he could have finished the fight earlier.

Aljamain Sterling specifically accused Holloway of “pulling back” his punches after knocking Poirier down twice in the opening round. Despite this, Poirier nearly secured a finish in Round 2 with strikes and a guillotine choke attempt. Ultimately, Holloway won the fight by unanimous decision.

Poirier later revealed that Holloway admitted backstage to being “out” after being dropped in Round 2. Contrary to many opinions, Poirier himself believed the fight was tied 2-2 entering the fifth and final round.

Dustin Poirier concludes his career as one of the most distinguished fighters never to claim a lineal UFC title. Max Holloway, on the other hand, might defend his BMF belt later this year as he approaches a possible lightweight title opportunity.
