Demetrious Johnson Explains Why TJ Dillashaw Superfight Never Happened

UFC icon Demetrious Johnson has finally clarified why a much-anticipated dream fight against TJ Dillashaw never came to pass. Johnson, widely considered the greatest flyweight in the sport’s history, revealed that financial disagreements were the major roadblock.

Despite his dominant championship reign and unparalleled achievements, Johnson has often voiced concerns about not receiving the promotional push and financial compensation befitting a fighter of his caliber. He recounted a specific conversation with then-UFC President Dana White that highlighted the core issue.

Johnson stated that the idea of a superfight with Dillashaw was first presented to him around the time he was preparing to fight Kyoji Horiguchi. “Mighty Mouse” approached White, expressing his desire for a high-profile matchup. “I’m looking for that superfight,” Johnson told White, who then suggested, “Why don’t you fight TJ Dillashaw?”

Johnson’s demand was clear: “Pay me a million dollars.” White’s response, according to Johnson, was unequivocal: “I can’t pay what you don’t bring in.” This exchange underscored a fundamental disconnect over fighter value and compensation.

Ultimately, this dispute over a million-dollar payday prevented what many fans saw as a potential classic. The unfulfilled bout remains a notable “what if” in UFC history, further illustrating how financial considerations can derail major matchups. Nevertheless, Demetrious Johnson’s legacy as one of MMA’s all-time greats remains undeniable.
