With Ilia Topuria vacating his spot, a well-known figure has reclaimed the leading position in the featherweight division.

Headlining UFC 314, Alexander Volkanovski, a former champion, secured the title for the second time. He delivered a classic five-round display against a resilient Diego Lopes. As expected, Volkanovski has returned to the number one ranking globally. Meanwhile, Topuria has been entirely removed from the rankings, having indicated his future lies solely in the lightweight division (155 pounds).

This return is familiar to fans, as Volkanovski previously held the top rank for more than four years until Topuria defeated him earlier. Now back on top, he has numerous prospects to solidify his legacy further, facing new contenders like the undefeated Movsar Evloev and two fighters who secured significant victories recently in April.

Jean Silva also made a significant impact at UFC 314. He advanced his UFC record to 5-0 with an impressive victory against Bryce Mitchell. Known for his energy, Silva controlled the standing exchanges against Mitchell before securing a clever ninja choke submission in the second round. His spectacular showing arguably generated the most excitement among fighters leaving Miami.

Furthermore, Lerone Murphy quietly entered the top 10 rankings for the first time after defeating Josh Emmett in the main event of UFC Vegas 105. While perhaps not always producing highlight-reel finishes, Murphy maintains an undefeated professional record and has won eight consecutive UFC bouts since his debut draw. With potential opponents emerging, it`s plausible that Murphy could contend for a championship opportunity in the near future.

Regardless of his next opponent, Volkanovski is once again at the forefront of the division, a position that seemed improbable following his loss to Topuria over a year prior. His return to prominence is a notable positive story of 2025, and he is undoubtedly motivated to compete again and silence any remaining skeptics.
