Gina Carano Offers Empathy After Sean Strickland’s Ronda Rousey Tirade

Gina Carano offers empathy after Sean Strickland’s Ronda Rousey tirade

Gina Carano has addressed Sean Strickland’s recent controversial remarks regarding her highly anticipated bout against Ronda Rousey, choosing to interpret his statements as expressions of underlying pain rather than engaging in a verbal sparring match.

Strickland, a former UFC middleweight champion, sparked widespread debate after deriding the forthcoming Netflix-backed Rousey vs. Carano comeback fight. He dismissed the event as a clash between “two middle-aged women” that held no interest for him. Prior to this, Strickland had already faced criticism for proclaiming women’s MMA during Carano’s era “sucked,” suggesting Rousey would easily defeat her, and making light of Rousey’s past experiences with abusive relationships, while controversially asserting that women have been “empowered too much.” These comments, made during recent media appearances to promote his fight with Anthony Hernandez, incited a wave of condemnation from fans and media alike, who labeled them as sexist and disrespectful to female athletes.

Gina Carano’s Empathetic Response to Strickland’s Comments

Carano, 43, consciously avoided mirroring Strickland’s inflammatory tone. During her fight week media engagements, she conveyed that she doesn’t invest energy in his opinions, perceiving them instead as originating from a place of personal hurt. “I believe his words unfortunately stem from a place of pain. Hurt people often hurt others,” Carano stated. She further described Strickland as “somewhat exploited,” noting that “that pain is clearly visible.” She concluded by suggesting, “All one can do is pray for that man,” making it clear she views his outbursts as a reflection of his own struggles rather than a valid critique of her upcoming fight with Rousey.

Opting not to escalate the situation into a personal rivalry, Carano redirected the discourse towards the broader significance she believes her matchup embodies. The former Strikeforce standout, who transitioned to acting after her last fight in 2009, characterized herself as someone prepared to defend her home, children, and personal safety. She expressed a desire for society to foster more “Viking-esque women” ready to do the same.

According to Carano, the Rousey fight transcends mere sport; it’s about showcasing women’s physical prowess and their readiness to protect themselves. She contended that even Strickland, despite his remarks, would likely wish for his own nieces and daughters to possess such capabilities.

The Carano vs. Rousey event, scheduled for May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and set to stream globally on Netflix, brings together two of the most iconic figures in women’s mixed martial arts history. Carano was among the sport’s earliest mainstream stars, boasting a 7-1 record and headlining prominent Strikeforce bouts. Rousey later achieved fame as the UFC’s inaugural women’s bantamweight champion, becoming a mainstream crossover sensation after her retirement from the cage in 2016.

This long-speculated encounter, finally materializing in 2026 after both athletes spent years away from competition, has ignited a fierce debate regarding age, relevance, and the ongoing conversation surrounding how female fighters are perceived and discussed at the sport’s highest echelons.

Carano’s deliberate choice to respond to Strickland with empathy and a focus on personal healing, while simultaneously championing messages of self-defense and robust femininity, sharply contrasts with the aggressive tone that initially propelled his comments into the public spotlight.
