The future of legendary fighter Jon Jones within the Ultimate Fighting Championship is now uncertain. The former two-division champion has publicly asked for his contract to be terminated, a situation reportedly stemming from a disagreement with UFC CEO Dana White regarding his potential participation in a major upcoming UFC event.
Jones had been prominently associated with the highly anticipated UFC Freedom 250, an event slated for June 14, 2026, at the historic White House. This unique venue and the event’s significance generated considerable buzz. However, when the fight card was unveiled, Jones’s name was conspicuously absent.
Following the announcement, White commented that Jones was never seriously considered for the event. He cited concerns over Jones’s health and recent inactivity, noting Jones’s previous hints at retirement and a diagnosis of hip arthritis. These factors, White explained, made the promotion hesitant to build a high-profile event around him.
Jones quickly responded to White’s remarks on social media. The former heavyweight king asserted that discussions about him fighting on the White House card had indeed taken place. He further claimed to have already reduced his financial demands during negotiations, yet he felt the final offer from the UFC was significantly less than his expectations.
Jones Publicly Requests UFC Release
Frustration over the unfolding situation led Jones to formally request his release from his UFC contract. He declared that if the promotion genuinely believes his fighting career is over, they should permit him to depart and pursue other professional avenues.
Addressing White’s health concerns, Jones acknowledged his hip arthritis but clarified that he recently underwent stem cell treatment and was actively preparing for a training camp in anticipation of a potential bout.
The 38-year-old last competed in November 2024, successfully defending his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic. After this victory, Jones briefly announced his retirement before later expressing renewed interest in participating in a major event.
As of now, the UFC has not confirmed whether they will grant Jones’s request. This development has ignited widespread discussion within the MMA community, with fans keenly observing whether Jones will remain with the UFC or potentially become a free agent.
