Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall: New Chapter in UFC Heavyweight Rivalry

Jon Jones recently made uncharacteristic critical remarks about Tom Aspinall online, though one specific point he raised seems incorrect.

There`s growing fan demand for legendary two-division UFC champion Jon Jones to face Tom Aspinall upon his return, but Jones appears hesitant. Aspinall, the interim heavyweight champion, surprisingly holds the same number of title defenses as Jones (zero), despite claiming his belt much more recently.

After a lengthy trip abroad filming a reality show, Jones returned to the United States today and immediately became active on social media, engaging with fans. He soon launched into a series of critical posts directed at Aspinall.

Jones`s Inaccurate Submission Claim About Aspinall

As Jon Jones delved deeper into conversations with fans on X (formerly Twitter), he was quickly met with numerous comments concerning his ongoing rivalry with Tom Aspinall. He addressed several of these messages before concluding his online activity for the evening.

Following a post where he shared statistics comparing American and international UFC champions, Jones responded sarcastically to a fan who suggested Aspinall was the true undisputed heavyweight king. Jones quipped, “That`s awesome, you guys could use one.”

His most notable assertion came in reply to a tweet that was rapidly removed. Jones stated, “Unfortunately, my boy is not as special as his fan base thinks he is right now… I`ve seen Tom get tapped out twice now by two different people. Time will show. Here today gone tomorrow.”

This statement implies either the existence of private, unreleased footage or, more likely, a misunderstanding by Jones. Aspinall`s record shows only one professional loss by submission, which was to Stuart Austin in BAMMA nearly a decade ago. His two other career defeats were a disqualification and a loss due to a severe injury.

Jon Jones Discusses UFC Plans Amidst Heavyweight Speculation

Jones has consistently appeared reluctant to commit to fighting Aspinall and maintains that his future in the sport is uncertain. However, at a recent seminar, he informed attendees that he has discussed his future plans with UFC officials.

He hinted that legal considerations mean any official announcement about a potential fight would come from Dana White, rather than himself or Aspinall. Responding to a fan`s question about the fight status, he explained, “The UFC, I, and Tom, we`ve all got a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes.”

He added, “They`re one of the biggest organizations in sports. Right now, Tom and I have agreed to wait for the UFC to make their announcements. So, legally I can`t really talk about it.”
