Josh Taylor Shows Off Brutal Face Injuries After Crushing Ekow Essuman Loss and Explains Why He Stormed Out of the Ring

Josh Taylor has issued an apology to his supporters and pledged to continue his boxing career after his abrupt departure from the ring following a disappointing fight in his hometown. Having signed with Frank Warren`s Queensberry Promotions, Taylor had moved up to the welterweight division, seeking to revitalize his path in the sport.

However, in his first bout in a year, the celebrated Scottish boxer suffered a humbling defeat by points against Ekow Essuman during their match in Glasgow. The former undisputed world champion chose not to remain in the ring to congratulate Essuman or express gratitude to the 13,000 fans who attended to support him.

Taylor, clearly upset with the judges` decision, later posted an apology: “I want to sincerely apologize to all the fans for leaving the ring last night without giving an interview or taking the moment to thank you all for showing up and creating an incredible atmosphere, as you have consistently done for the past decade.”

He explained his immediate exit, stating, “I went straight to the changing rooms because I didn`t want to say anything in the heat of the moment on live television that I might regret later.”

He added, “Your support means the world to me, and you`ve helped create wonderful memories that I will cherish forever. You have all contributed to some truly incredible moments in my life, and despite the outcome, last night was another special occasion right up there with the best, so thank you all.”

He also extended thanks: “Thank you to Queensberry for bringing a major event back to Scotland, and congratulations to Ekow once again on his victory.”

Taylor had previously reached the pinnacle of the super-lightweight division, becoming undisputed champion in just 18 professional fights and earning a place in pound-for-pound rankings discussions.

However, signs of struggle emerged following his controversial split-decision win against Jack Catterall in 2022. He then suffered defeats, first to American Teofimo Lopez in 2023, followed by a loss in his rematch against Jack Catterall last May.

The recent loss to Essuman marks his third consecutive defeat, significantly impacting Taylor`s career prospects, but the southpaw remains determined to continue fighting.

Showing visible facial injuries, including a swollen eye, the 34-year-old told iFL TV: “I plan to be back in the gym within a couple of weeks.”

He reflected on recent years: “That`s been a mistake I`ve made recently, getting into that routine. Having only one fight a year since 2020 simply isn`t enough activity.”

He reiterated his respect for his opponent: “Congratulations again to Ekow and his team. He fought well, it was a good fight, and I would certainly like to have a rematch to try and get that win back.”

He acknowledged Essuman`s position: “But he`s absolutely entitled to pursue other opportunities. He`s worked for his chance and will likely be looking for bigger fights now.”

“However,” Taylor concluded, “I would genuinely welcome another fight with him because it was a real contest.”
