Joshua Van Knocks Out Tatsuro Taira, Retains Flyweight Title at UFC 328

Joshua Van delivered a performance worthy of a “Fight of the Year” contender, successfully retaining his flyweight championship against Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328 on Saturday night. The bout was a dramatic back-and-forth affair that concluded with a spectacular knockout.

The early rounds saw Tatsuro Taira dictating the pace with multiple takedowns. While Van consistently managed to return to his feet and land effective strikes, Taira’s control time seemed to give him an early advantage on the scorecards. This pattern continued into the second round, but the momentum shifted dramatically in the final minute. Van managed to escape Taira’s grasp and landed a powerful right hand that sent Taira to the canvas. Van pressed for a finish, but Taira demonstrated resilience, surviving the onslaught and making it to the third round.

Van continued to assert dominance in the third round, securing another knockdown and nearly locking in a rear-naked choke. Despite Van’s best efforts to secure a submission, Taira once again weathered the storm and ended the round in a dominant position.

The fourth round saw Taira regain control, executing a late takedown and spending a significant portion of the round in a dominant ground position. However, this would be the last round Taira would see to completion.

In the decisive fifth round, Van unleashed a series of powerful body shots before landing a clean right hand that stunned Taira, causing him to turn away. Referee Jason Herzog deemed Taira unable to intelligently defend himself and stepped in to stop the fight. Taira immediately protested the stoppage, but his body language indicated he was in no condition to continue.

Official Result: Joshua Van defeated Tatsuro Taira via TKO (strikes) at 1:32 of Round 5, retaining the UFC flyweight world championship.
