The Japanese kickboxing promotion K-1 has implemented significantly tougher penalties for fighters who fail to make the contracted weight.
K-1 has introduced a significant change to its rules regarding weigh-ins, effective from the July 13 event in Fukuoka and the July 26 Krush event at Korakuen Hall. Previously, fighters who missed weight faced standard penalties, but their bouts could still proceed as official contests with the opponent`s agreement.
These previous penalties often involved fines, points deductions, and mandatory use of larger gloves – measures already considered stringent by industry norms. Now, K-1 is intensifying its measures to enforce weight class integrity.
Under the revised rules, effective from the specified July events, only a victory by the fighter who successfully made weight will be recorded as an official result. Any other outcome, such as a draw, a win for the fighter who missed weight, or a disqualification, will be declared a no contest. This updated policy aligns with the precedent set by the Japanese MMA organization RIZIN.
