Kai Asakura is set for his third appearance in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on May 30 at UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo in Macau. He will face American bantamweight Cameron Smotherman in what marks his first fight since transitioning from the flyweight division. Asakura personally confirmed the matchup on social media, expressing his intention to showcase a significantly “evolved” version of himself in his new weight class.

The event, UFC Fight Night: Song vs. Figueiredo, is scheduled for May 30, 2026, at the Galaxy Arena in Macau. This fight night is part of a larger three-day UFC Fight Week, which also includes Road to UFC Season 5 events taking place on May 28 and 29. The main card features a compelling bantamweight bout between China’s Song Yadong and the former two-time UFC flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo. This event signifies the promotion’s fifth visit to Macau and its first since a November 2024 Fight Night which was headlined by Petr Yan and Figueiredo.

Asakura joined the UFC in 2024 following a distinguished career in RIZIN, where he held the bantamweight title and earned a reputation for his devastating knockout power and sharp counterpunching. Upon his arrival in the UFC, he initially competed in the flyweight division, where he secured a title opportunity against Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 310 in December 2024, followed by another bout with veteran Tim Elliott at UFC 319 in August 2025.

While Asakura contested his fights against Pantoja and Elliott at flyweight, he has now explicitly confirmed that his upcoming clash with Smotherman in Macau will be his inaugural UFC bantamweight bout. This move brings him back to the division where he initially made his name in Japan, albeit under the unified rules of the UFC, which do not permit the soccer kicks and stomps that were a prominent feature of his highlight reel in RIZIN.

A notable aspect of Kai Asakura’s personal story is how deeply his early life was shaped by real street fights, rather than formal gym training. Growing up in Aichi, both he and his older brother Mikuru were well-known for getting into physical altercations in their neighborhood, frequently clashing with other local youths, and at times, even each other. Kai later credited these formative experiences with developing his resilience and toughness long before he ever stepped into a proper dojo for formal training.

At the age of 18, Mikuru challenged Kai late one night, providing him with boxing gloves and intending to engage in a serious fight. To Mikuru’s astonishment, Kai demonstrated remarkable evasiveness, slipping and avoiding nearly every strike. This pivotal moment convinced the younger Asakura that he possessed an innate talent for fighting, which subsequently motivated him to begin formal mixed martial arts training.

Beyond his prowess as a top-tier fighter, Kai Asakura is widely regarded as a significant mainstream influencer in Japan. The UFC’s own biographical information highlights his extensive online presence, noting that his main YouTube channel boasts approximately 1.3 million subscribers and describes him as a “megastar in Japan” who is a regular invitee to television shows.

Cameron Smotherman, an American fighter, competes in the UFC’s bantamweight division, holding a professional record of 12 wins and 6 losses. His fighting style is characterized by a consistent output of strikes and a readiness to engage in prolonged exchanges. His past performances on regional cards and during his early UFC appearances showcase a balanced mix of victories secured through decisions and finishes.

Smotherman previously garnered significant attention when he collapsed and face-planted on stage immediately after making weight for UFC 324 in Las Vegas. This dramatic incident led to the cancellation of his scheduled bout against Ricky Turcios and subsequently became a viral online clip, circulating widely across social media platforms.

For Smotherman, this upcoming fight represents a high-visibility opportunity. Facing a former Japanese champion who commands a substantial built-in following, he has the chance to potentially disrupt the considerable promotional momentum behind Asakura’s anticipated move to the bantamweight division, making this a pivotal fight for both athletes.
