Khabib and Usman Nurmagomedov Clash Over Paul Hughes Rematch

Ahead of Friday`s significant PFL lightweight title rematch, Khabib Nurmagomedov expresses a viewpoint distinctly different from that of his cousin, the reigning world champion, Usman Nurmagomedov.

Following their January encounter, Usman Nurmagomedov had famously stated that Paul Hughes would need several more victories to secure another title shot. Yet, after just one subsequent fight — a swift 42-second knockout of Bruno Miranda — Hughes is already set for a rematch against Usman at the Coca-Cola Arena.

While the rivalry between Hughes and Nurmagomedov might share superficial similarities with Khabib’s past feud with Conor McGregor, their narratives diverge significantly, making them almost impossible to compare. Consequently, this upcoming bout presents a much less contentious atmosphere.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Endorses PFL Title Rematch, Hailing Paul Hughes as the `New Generation of MMA`

Despite Usman`s preference for other challengers in his next fight, the broader MMA community largely agrees that a rematch with Hughes is imperative after their grueling five-round battle. This sentiment is echoed even by his coach and cousin, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“I believe this will be a massive rematch. The initial fight was challenging due to Paul Hughes. Although Usman secured a 4-1 round victory in my view, it was far from effortless. Hughes is a relentless competitor; Usman must be prepared for his continuous pressure. If you don’t stop him, he’ll keep advancing. Paul Hughes represents the new wave of MMA, and Usman is training exceptionally hard. Paul has earned this rematch, given the incredibly tough fight Usman delivered him.”

Usman Nurmagomedov Holds a Divergent View from his Renowned Cousin, Khabib

Even with such high commendation from an MMA legend like Khabib, Usman Nurmagomedov maintains that Hughes’ resume was insufficient to warrant an initial title shot. Furthermore, he believes Hughes does not deserve a rematch, especially after failing to capitalize on a point deduction during their first encounter.

Discussing the upcoming bout with reporters, Usman clarified:

“Khabib has his perspective, and I have mine. Our opinions don’t always align. In my judgment, Hughes still hasn`t earned this. But ultimately, who truly cares? No one. We’ll fight on Friday. All is well, training camp went smoothly, Alhamdulillah. After a strenuous day of cutting weight, that’s it; we’ll fight, Inshallah.”
