Rafael Freitas has publicly addressed the incident where he assaulted MMA legend Wanderlei Silva in the ring during Spaten Fight Night 2, offering his explanation for the controversial actions.
Silva, a celebrated figure in mixed martial arts with a distinguished career in promotions like UFC and Pride, recently made a comeback in São Paulo. His return at Spaten Fight Night 2 saw him headline against Acelino Freitas, a former two-time Brazilian boxing champion.
Concerns were already high regarding the 49-year-old`s return, especially after his recent remarks about suffering a brain injury in 2024. These fears tragically materialized when the veteran fighter was left unconscious on the canvas.
However, the dramatic knockout did not occur during the official bout itself. Instead, Wanderlei Silva was rendered unconscious amidst a chaotic brawl that erupted in the ring. The melee began after `The Axe Murderer` was disqualified for repeatedly head-butting Freitas.
As punches were exchanged between both teams, Silva was attacked from behind by a man in a tuxedo. This individual then delivered a brutal punch that knocked the former UFC star out cold, reportedly breaking his nose.
Acelino Freitas` Son Explains Why He Attacked Wanderlei Silva
The man responsible for knocking out Silva was later identified as Rafael Freitas, son of Acelino Freitas. Although he has since deleted his social media accounts following the revelation, Rafael issued a statement to the Brazilian outlet Globo to justify his actions.
“When I realized a brawl had started, initiated by Wanderlei’s team, his son, his coach Andre Dida, and (Fabricio) Werdum…when I saw all of them assaulting my father and my brothers, I (acted) in legitimate defense.”
“In the heat of the moment, I only thought about defending my family,” he added.
Acelino Freitas Blames Wanderlei Silva`s Team Member for Wild Brawl
Silva’s opponent, Acelino Freitas, corroborated his son’s account of the events at Spaten Fight Night 2. In a video shared on social media, Freitas specifically accused Fabricio Werdum of instigating the brawl.
“I don’t know what the hell these guys put Werdum in this event for,” Freitas remarked in Portuguese, referring to the former UFC champion. “This guy only messes up at other people’s events.”
“Werdum, I’m ashamed, man. If I were you, I’d be ashamed, okay? I’m ashamed. You’re the one who came at me. There’s a video of you on top of me, trying to beat me up, man. But God knows what He’s doing,” he concluded.
