Max Holloway discredits Ilia Topuria’s legendary run as he continues to eye title rematch

Max Holloway is expressing skepticism about the widespread perception of Ilia Topuria`s recent success, suggesting it might not be as historically significant as some believe.

Holloway is scheduled to step back into the Octagon on July 19th for the first time since his loss to Topuria at UFC 308. He will defend his BMF title against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 318.

While many expected him to be disappointed by Topuria moving up in weight, Holloway stated he was the “happiest man on earth” when “El Matador” won the lightweight title.

The former featherweight champion sees this as an opportunity, believing a dominant performance against Poirier in Louisiana could pave the way for a rematch against the Spaniard, potentially at lightweight.

Holloway offers perspective on Topuria’s notable victories

Topuria has rapidly risen to prominence, becoming a dual-division champion after knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. This followed consecutive knockout victories over Alexander Volkanovski and Holloway, a run many have labeled among the greatest in the sport`s history.

However, Holloway has somewhat downplayed the legendary status of this run, adding context to Topuria`s recent wins over Volkanovski and Oliveira.

“It`s just tough, right. Yeah he beat the names and you can`t deny that, but then when you look, it just sucks when you look at everything that was going on when you look at that Volk fight,” Holloway told ShakMMA. “Volk was coming off what he (was coming off), that`s kind of crazy, but people just look at the names, they`re not looking at the record, they`re just like `Oh Alex was the champ`, and then me and then Charles.”

He continued, pointing out Oliveira`s recent form, “Charles was on a one fight win streak, at the end of the day, they’re just moments and they’re just names… The man is doing what he’s supposed to do.” While acknowledging Topuria`s accomplishments, Holloway seems to suggest the narrative should consider the circumstances surrounding these high-profile wins.

Could a lightweight rematch between Topuria and Holloway happen?

After claiming the 155lb belt, Topuria faced off with Paddy Pimblett, but UFC President Dana White later indicated that bout is unlikely to be next. White also mentioned that Arman Tsarukyan is not immediately slated for another title shot, seemingly clearing the field somewhat.

Therefore, an emphatic victory for Holloway over “The Diamond” at UFC 318 could undoubtedly propel him into the lightweight title conversation. Given their recent history and Topuria`s move up, Holloway might find himself high on the list of potential contenders for the lightweight belt.
