PFL star Paul Hughes adopted a tactic inspired by Tom Aspinall to subtly message his past foe.
Paul Hughes and Usman Nurmagomedov delivered an instant classic bout at PFL Champions Series 1 in January. Months later, their rivalry is still intense, fueling demands from fans for a rematch between the two lightweights.
Hughes has not competed since his swift 42-second knockout victory over Bruno Miranda at PFL Europe 1 in May. Although not scheduled to fight at PFL Europe 2 on Saturday in Brussels, Hughes attended the event to support his fellow fighters.
However, even off duty at PFL Europe 2, Hughes used his presence during the broadcast to jab at his chief rival.
Paul Hughes Targets Usman Nurmagomedov Amid Rematch Discussions
UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall previously mocked Jon Jones during a broadcast at UFC London this year by displaying a plastic duck, aiming to provoke his long-standing adversary. However, Aspinall`s efforts to agitate Jones did not result in a fight, as Jones announced his retirement from MMA last month.
During the PFL Europe 2 telecast, Hughes imitated Aspinall`s memorable gesture by also using a toy duck to taunt Nurmagomedov.
As of now, Nurmagomedov has not publicly reacted to Hughes`s taunt. Previously, Nurmagomedov had suggested Hughes should secure at least one more victory before advocating for a rematch.
The PFL recently hinted at Nurmagomedov’s upcoming opponent, stating that the winner of the Archie Colgan vs. Mansour Barnaoui bout at PFL World Tournament 6 would be next. Colgan won that match via unanimous decision.
Hughes expressed dissatisfaction with the PFL`s choice to grant Colgan the next title shot against Nurmagomedov. It remains unclear whether Hughes will wait for Nurmagomedov`s fight with Colgan or take another bout against a different rising contender.
