BKFC Bantamweight Title Vacant: Justin Ibarrola Steps Down, Jamel Herring vs. Nate Maness Booked
A significant shift has occurred within the BKFC bantamweight division, as the championship belt has been declared vacant. Promoter David Feldman recently made the official announcement on The Bare Knuckle Show, confirming that Justin Ibarrola has relinquished his 135-pound title.
Feldman explained that Ibarrola conveyed he wasn't prepared to fully undertake the responsibilities of being a champion at this point in his career. Ibarrola reportedly expressed a desire to pursue other ventures, potentially including glove boxing, rather than focusing solely on defending his BKFC crown. Feldman clarified that this decision was entirely Ibarrola's, stemming from a wish for personal development and diverse career opportunities, and not a result of any fear or his recent fight outside the organization.
Emphasizing a positive relationship, Feldman stated, "Listen, man, we really like Justin Ibarrola. He’s been a part of growing this thing in South Florida. Nothing but respect. No negative, no nothing to him at all. Just, you know, we wish him the best." He further confirmed that Ibarrola would continue to compete under the BKFC banner, but without the obligations of a reigning champion, allowing him the flexibility to "bounce around a little bit" and explore various fighting paths.
Justin Ibarrola himself echoed similar sentiments regarding his decision to vacate the title, stating, "Just moving around. Still fighting for BKFC but can’t move around as I want as their champion." This underscores his preference for greater autonomy in his fighting schedule and choices.
With the bantamweight title now open, a new championship bout has already been slated. Former WBO super featherweight champion Jamel Herring is set to face ex-UFC flyweight Nate Maness for the vacant belt. This highly anticipated clash will take place at BKFC 89 on May 22nd in Palm Desert, California, where a new BKFC bantamweight champion will be crowned.
