Colby Covington Expresses Strong Disappointment with UFC White House Card
Colby Covington has voiced significant disappointment regarding the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 event.
A staunch supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, Covington had expressed a strong desire to compete at the White House, even proposing bouts against Paddy Pimblett or Bo Nickal. However, the UFC ultimately did not include him on the June 14 fight card.
Following the promotion's recent announcement of the UFC Freedom 250 lineup, many within the mixed martial arts community, including Covington himself, have expressed dissatisfaction with the planned matchups. "Chaos" is not only upset about his exclusion but has also sharply criticized the overall quality of the fights scheduled for the South Lawn of the White House.
In a recent interview, Covington described the White House card as "terrible and disorganized," suggesting that the promotion has lost its focus. He elaborated on his frustration, stating:
“It’s truly subpar. The fans have already made their feelings clear – they dislike it. It's a dreadful card. They initially promised six or seven title fights, and now we're left with just one title bout and an interim title fight that was hastily arranged. The entire event feels incredibly disorganized. It was put together at the last minute, lacking any prominent, high-ranking American fighters. Who are the athletes representing America on its 250th birthday? It appears they no longer prioritize these details. They secured a substantial deal with Paramount, and now they seem content. It simply is what it is.”
During the same interview, Covington also mentioned that UFC Executive Vice President Hunter Campbell has indicated a future matchup for him against the winner of the Mike Malott vs. Gilbert Burns fight.
Bo Nickal Alleges Colby Covington Declined White House Fight Opportunity
UFC middleweight Bo Nickal had hoped to face Colby Covington at the White House, seeking to confront Covington for previous comments made about him. Nickal, who is now confirmed for the UFC Freedom 250 lineup, is set to compete against Kyle Daukaus (17-4).
In a recent discussion with Ariel Helwani, Nickal claimed that UFC matchmakers had contacted Covington about a potential fight at the White House, but "Chaos" purportedly declined the offer. Nickal stated:
“The UFC informed him, ‘If you wish to be on this card, you must fight Bo,’ and he refused. He would rather behave like a coward and avoid fighting me than seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fight at the White House. Everyone knows it would essentially be akin to leading a lamb to slaughter… In a way, I understand, because you’re literally going out there just to be defeated.”
