Khabib Nurmagomedov: Why He Disapproves of Women Competing in MMA
Former UFC lightweight champion and Hall of Famer, Khabib Nurmagomedov, has reiterated his strong disapproval of women competing in mixed martial arts (MMA). The retired fighter stated that he finds it unsettling to watch female athletes exchange blows, whether in training or during a competitive bout.
During a recent interview, when a female reporter inquired about his perspective on the growth of women's MMA, Nurmagomedov responded with a pointed question: "How do you feel about getting hit in the face?" He then acknowledged that his views would likely attract criticism, but proceeded to elaborate on his rationale, emphasizing the significance of facial appearance. "Our face is the most precious part of our body, isn't it? We all strive to look good daily. While men might glance in the mirror occasionally, women, if they carry a mirror, might check their appearance a thousand times a day."
Further discussing his position, Nurmagomedov clarified why he prefers not to see women in the octagon. He acknowledged that some women do choose the sport, stating, "It’s their choice. They chose it." However, he personally would not endorse it for women, describing it as "brutal for men, first of all. For women, I don’t even consider it… For me, it’s still something wild when a woman gets hit in the face."
Nurmagomedov concluded by emphasizing the importance of traditional gender roles, while still acknowledging the need for women to learn self-defense. "The Eagle" asserted his belief that "God created it this way: A woman is weaker, a man is stronger," and expressed his preference for societal structures where "a man does men’s work, and a woman does women’s work." He elaborated on what he views as a man's mission: "to raise children, take care of the family, and take care of loved ones," suggesting that few women are suited for "big responsibilities," finding it "very hard for them." He voiced criticism against attempts to "change and mix all of this."
These recent remarks align with Nurmagomedov's past controversial statements regarding women's involvement in combat sports. He previously stirred debate by referring to MMA ring girls as "the most useless" aspect of the sport.
