Tom Aspinall Confirms Plans to Fight in 2026 After Eye Injury Recovery
Exciting news has emerged for the UFC heavyweight division and its fans, as reigning champion Tom Aspinall is preparing for his highly anticipated return to the octagon later in 2026.
Aspinall was promoted from interim to undisputed champion last year following Jon Jones' decision to vacate his title and retire. However, his initial title defense at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane took an unfortunate turn when he suffered a double eye-poke in the first round, preventing him from continuing the bout.
The fight with Gane resulted in serious eye injuries for Aspinall, requiring surgery on both eyes just last month. Post-surgical complications initially kept him from being cleared for any training.
Despite these setbacks, the British fighter has provided an encouraging update. During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Tom Aspinall was questioned about a potential heavyweight title defense in 2026, to which he responded:
“I hope so. I think so. They are giving me the indication that everything is going in the right direction, and I am improving fast. There was a time when things were all up in the air because we had some complications with it, but everything now is moving good, and I’m feeling a lot better.”
Aspinall further elaborated that the severity of his eye injury initially led him to fear he might never return to MMA training:
“I just thought about what I am going to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been involved in martial arts since I was 8 years old… Without being able to do any kind of martial arts.”
Concluding his remarks, the 32-year-old stated:
“That’s all in the past, mate. I’m out of the dark, and we’re moving towards the light, so I’m absolutely buzzing.”
Tom Aspinall's Reaction to UFC Freedom 250 Co-Main Event
Given Aspinall's current recuperation, the interim UFC heavyweight championship is scheduled to be contested on June 14, featuring a clash between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane. Upon the promotion's announcement of these high-profile matchups last weekend, Aspinall shared his thoughts on the "Poatan" vs. "Bon Gamin" bout, remarking:
“I mean, who else is going to fight? The division’s on its a*s. There’s not many big fights to make, is there? So they’ve got to do what they’ve got to do. Obviously, I want to fight the winner of that. Just waiting now to get the green light, the all clear from the doctor to start training properly again. As soon as we can start training properly again, full contact in the gym, we will be getting a fight date booked to fight the winner.”
Upon his return, Aspinall is legally obligated to face the newly crowned interim UFC heavyweight champion. Nevertheless, the British fighter has explicitly targeted Ciryl Gane, driven by a desire for retribution following the eye poke incident that interrupted his career.
