Indian Wells Open 2026: Top Contenders and Predictions

The highly anticipated Sunshine Swing commences on March 2nd, with the Indian Wells Open taking center stage. Often dubbed the 'Fifth Grand Slam,' this prestigious tournament draws the world's elite players to California.

Defending champions Jack Draper and Mirra Andreeva face a formidable challenge as they look to retain their singles titles against a field featuring all of the world's top competitors.

In the men's draw, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are widely favored by oddsmakers. For the women's singles, Iga Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina are considered the leading contenders.

Men's Singles Outlook

Carlos Alcaraz, fresh off victories in Melbourne and Doha, enters Indian Wells as the top favorite. The Spaniard has a strong track record here, having claimed the title in both 2023 and 2024.

Indian Wells has proven less fruitful for Jannik Sinner, whose best performances have been semi-final runs in 2023 and 2024. He recently lost a thrilling semi-final to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open and was defeated by Jakub Mensik in the Doha quarter-finals.

After securing a win in Brisbane, Daniil Medvedev had somewhat disappointing outings in Melbourne, Rotterdam, and Doha. However, he recently reached the final in Dubai and was a finalist at Indian Wells in both 2023 and 2024, losing both times to Alcaraz.

Defending champion Jack Draper certainly warrants attention. He famously upset Alcaraz in the semifinals last year and went on to defeat Holger Rune comfortably in the final. However, his recent performance, a first-round win followed by a loss to Arthur Rinderknech in Dubai, doesn't strongly suggest he's prepared to challenge top contenders like Alcaraz and Sinner in California.

Apart from a less than stellar Australian Open, Andrey Rublev has generally had a strong start to the year. He lost in straight sets to Alcaraz in Doha, though he pushed the first set to a tie-break. He was also competing in the Dubai semi-finals at the time of this analysis.

Undeniably, Alcaraz is the player to overcome, boasting an impressive 12-0 record this year. Since April 2025, only Cam Norrie and Sinner have managed to defeat him on the ATP Tour.

Women's Singles Overview

Mirra Andreeva, the reigning champion, has struggled with form since her Adelaide victory, while Jessica Pegula and Elina Svitolina contested the recent Dubai final. Despite this, the betting markets continue to heavily favor Sabalenka, Świątek, and Rybakina for the Indian Wells title.

Last year, Andreeva mounted a comeback from a set down to defeat Sabalenka in a memorable final. Earlier this year in Melbourne, Sabalenka and Rybakina engaged in an epic clash, following Sabalenka's dominant performance in Brisbane.

Elena Rybakina, the 2023 Indian Wells champion, has resumed practice following her retirement in Dubai. While she has only secured three match wins since her Australian Open triumph, she has repeatedly demonstrated her ability to defeat Sabalenka in recent months.

Should one choose to bet against Sabalenka, Rybakina presents a compelling alternative given her recent performances. Jessica Pegula is another strong contender, having won in Dubai after reaching the Melbourne semifinals and securing victories against Coco Gauff and Jasmine Paolini at the WTA Finals.

However, Pegula's ability to consistently overcome the world's top players remains a question, as she holds a 1-5 record against Sabalenka and hasn't defeated Rybakina since 2023.
