Tang Kai Defends ONE Featherweight MMA World Title Against Shamil Gasanov At ONE Fight Night 42

China’s most accomplished featherweight MMA champion is set to defend his prestigious title for the second time next month. Tang Kai will put his ONE Featherweight MMA World Title on the line against the formidable Russian contender Shamil “The Cobra” Gasanov. This highly anticipated main event, ONE Fight Night 42, will broadcast live on Prime Video from Bangkok, Thailand’s Lumpinee Stadium on April 10, airing during U.S. primetime.

Tang’s journey to the top was characterized by strategic patience and precise execution. An impressive six-fight winning streak after joining ONE Championship, featuring three first-round stoppages, earned him a shot at then-champion Thanh Le at ONE 160 in August 2022.

Throughout their measured five-round contest, the Sunkin International Fight Club representative consistently targeted Le’s lead leg, dictated the tempo, and effectively found his range in striking exchanges. This disciplined performance culminated in a unanimous decision victory, making Tang Kai the first male MMA World Champion from China – a historic moment celebrated by thousands in his home province of Shaoyang, Hunan.

An injury subsequently interrupted his reign, allowing Le to capture an interim title in his absence. When the two rivals met again in a unification bout at ONE 166: Qatar in March 2024, Tang delivered his most comprehensive performance to date. He systematically broke Le down before securing a TKO finish in the third round. This decisive victory not only settled their rivalry but also earned him a US$50,000 performance bonus.

Tang later experienced his first promotional setback in a non-title catchweight bout against Akbar Abdullaev, after the Kyrgyz fighter missed weight. Despite this recent result, his status as champion and the stakes of his title defenses remain very much intact.

Shamil Gasanov arrives as arguably the most credible challenger the featherweight division has seen in quite some time. Representing Peresvet Fight Team and Tiger Muay Thai, Gasanov holds an impressive 18-1 professional record, including six victories within ONE Championship. His fighting style is built on suffocating grappling and relentless positional control.

He announced himself as a serious threat with a first-round rear-naked choke submission of Kim Jae Woong and further solidified his contender status with a dominant performance over former long-reigning divisional kingpin Martin Nguyen.

Most recently, at ONE Fight Night 34, Gasanov unequivocally demonstrated his readiness for a title shot by avenging his sole professional loss, defeating the decorated submission grappler Garry Tonon.

On April 10, the precise striking of the Chinese champion will clash with the overwhelming grappling prowess of the Russian challenger. This highly anticipated matchup promises a compelling and decisive outcome.
