Veteran UFC figure Randy Couture sustained notable injuries in a car crash during practice at a Kansas City race track and required airlift to a burn center for treatment.
The 62-year-old UFC Hall of Famer was preparing for his National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) debut when the serious accident occurred during a practice session on Tuesday. His injuries included first and second-degree burns on his body, general trauma, and smoke inhalation.
After the crash involving the vehicle he was driving, Couture was airlifted to a regional burn center, where he is currently recovering. Sources close to the former two-division UFC champion have confirmed the extent of his injuries, though he is expected to make a full recovery.
The exact cause of the accident leading to Couture`s injuries has not yet been determined.
Couture had reportedly been practicing and aiming for a race debut for several months, adding another pursuit to the legendary MMA figure`s diverse career portfolio.
In a recent interview, Couture acknowledged that race car driving presents a challenge completely distinct from even competitive mixed martial arts, a sport where he is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time. He specifically described racing as a “different animal.”
He had previously shared his long-time interest in racing, remarking, “From up in the stands it looks really easy — oh they just go fast … it`s so much more involved.”
As one of only a few fighters to hold titles in two different UFC weight classes, Couture transitioned after his fighting career into various roles including coaching, commentary, and acting. He founded Xtreme Couture, a highly regarded gym in Las Vegas, and has served on the PFL broadcast team while also building an extensive film and television career in recent years.
