Charles Jourdain Details Frightening Eye Injury Leading to UFC 331 TKO Loss
Charles Jourdain shared a concerning health issue that surfaced late in his UFC 331 fight against Marlon “Chito” Vera.
The bout, part of the preliminary card, saw Vera land a body shot followed by a head strike in the third round. Jourdain signaled to referee Mike Beltran that he could not continue, resulting in a TKO. Jourdain had significant justification for stopping the fight.
Jourdain explained via an Instagram Story, a significant eye problem led to the fight's conclusion (via MMAMania.com).
"I lost my eyesight in the third round," Jourdain stated. "I waved off the fight because I didn't want to take more head strikes. I lost. I failed."
Before UFC 331, Jourdain had informed media about a necessary eye surgery. This issue had previously caused the cancellation of a scheduled bout with Ricky Simon in 2025.
"I didn't realize how serious my eye was," Jourdain recounted. "During a routine pre-fight eye exam, the technician told me, 'Your eye is severely damaged. You cannot fight with it. You risk losing it.' I thought I was seeing fine. He insisted, 'I cannot permit you to fight.'"
"So, I underwent surgery a few weeks later. My vision hasn't improved or worsened; it was a retinal issue. They used a laser, a very uncomfortable procedure. I expected to see better, but nothing changed."
Jourdain had a three-fight win streak before Vera defeated him. His immediate focus after Saturday will be his eye. Eye injuries have been a recurring concern in MMA, notably with Tom Aspinall, who relinquished his UFC heavyweight title due to a recurring eye injury sustained during sparring.
