Jon Anik on Recent UFC Events: "It Hasn't Been a Great Few Weeks"
UFC commentator Jon Anik admits he hasn't been particularly moved by recent UFC events, expressing a sentiment he believes is shared by many fans.
While the premier mixed martial arts promotion currently enjoys substantial financial success, a segment of its fanbase has voiced frustration with the quality of the product. Critics suggest that the UFC leadership might be relying on minimal effort, bolstered by strong live gate revenues and its lucrative deal with Paramount+.
During a recent broadcast of the "Anik & Florian Podcast," the UFC's lead play-by-play announcer openly shared his belief that recent fight cards have fallen short of expectations.
Anik elaborated, stating, "I think a lot of people feel that way. And even when you think about this UFC podcast... we’re not talking about the co-main event. We’re not talking about (Christian Leroy Duncan’s) win over Roman Dolidze... because it’s not largely compelling." He further explained the challenge of consistently delivering top-tier entertainment, noting the sheer volume: "Forty-one UFC live events times 13 fights – it’s 533 UFC fights a year, not to mention the Contender Series and everything else. It’s a lot to continuously ask to hit triples and home runs."
Looking ahead, Anik expressed palpable excitement for UFC 327 in Miami on April 11. This highly anticipated event is set to feature a vacant light heavyweight title clash between Jiri Prochazka and Carlos Ulberg, alongside Joshua Van defending his flyweight championship against Tatsuro Taira in the co-main event.
These specific matchups are undoubtedly stirring excitement among MMA enthusiasts, but they may not represent the consistent level of thrill many fans are hoping for throughout 2026.
Acknowledging the "ebbs and flows" inherent in the sport's schedule, Anik stated his readiness to "scream through [his] f*cking neck at UFC 327." He concluded with a candid reflection: "I can have an honest conversation like this and tell you that I’m going to put my promotional best foot forward in a couple weeks. We have a tremendous card, and we’re going to blow it out, and I can’t wait for that. But, yeah, it hasn’t been a great few weeks to be sure."
