Paul Hughes Withdraws from PFL Belfast Main Event Due to Brutal Knee Injury
One of the PFL’s most anticipated fights of the year has been called off after Paul Hughes announced a significant injury that has pulled him from the PFL Belfast card.
Lightweight standout Paul Hughes was set to make his return to the Smartcage, facing formidable striker Jay-Jay Wilson in the PFL Belfast main event scheduled for April 16th. This fight was crucial for Hughes, who found himself in an uncertain position within the PFL lightweight title picture following a unanimous decision loss to Usman Nurmagomedov in October.
Despite his recent setback, Hughes remains a prominent figure in the PFL, having secured notable victories against AJ McKee, Bruno Miranda, and Bobby King. The Irish sensation had re-signed with the PFL, turning down reported interest from the UFC for his talents.
His upcoming bout with Wilson presented a major opportunity to re-establish his standing in the division, even after suffering two losses to Nurmagomedov. However, Hughes' return to competition is now on hold for an extended period, as he sustained a severe injury leading up to PFL Belfast.
Paul Hughes Potentially Sidelined for the Remainder of the Year After Serious Knee Surgery
In a recent video post, Hughes shared the distressing news that his planned PFL comeback fight had been cancelled due to a severe knee injury.
“I'm out of PFL Belfast. I did everything humanly possible. Surgery is scheduled for next week to address the issue. I sincerely apologize to all my supporters. I am absolutely heartbroken,” Hughes stated.
He added, “The event will still proceed, showcasing the top talent the island has to offer, including my teammates and the future stars of Irish MMA. I will return as swiftly as possible. The obstacle itself is the path forward.”
As of now, it remains unclear whether Jay-Jay Wilson will receive a replacement opponent or if the promotion will alter the main event for PFL Belfast. Regarding Hughes' recovery timeline, he could potentially be out of action for the remainder of the current year, depending on the full extent of his undisclosed injury.
