Terrance McKinney acknowledges the need for tactical adjustments. Known for his rapid finishes, McKinney admits that when he hurts an opponent, he often rushes in too aggressively, which can put him at a disadvantage. Following his recent loss to Chris Duncan—a fight where he was close to securing a finish—McKinney sat down with his coaching staff and committed to adopting a more patient approach.

He will have the opportunity to demonstrate this new strategy when he faces Kyle Nelson in an anticipated lightweight clash at UFC Seattle.

“It wouldn't have mattered who my opponent was; I would have accepted the fight,” McKinney stated. “Especially on the Seattle card… All my people are coming, I'm just thrilled. It's been a long time since I've had the chance to compete so close to home, so I'm eager to see the crowd's energy and turnout.”

While the identity of his opponent at UFC Seattle wasn't his primary concern, McKinney is enthusiastic about facing Kyle Nelson. Terrance McKinney anticipates an exciting contest and believes he holds distinct advantages.

“I possess the reach advantage, and I have the speed advantage,” McKinney explained. “I simply cannot lose control if I hurt him, because he also possesses power. As I’ve said, I just need to listen to my coaches and stick to the game plan for this fight. I know I have numerous tools to secure a victory, and the key is to actually utilize them and take my time. That is the main objective. Don’t rush it; pretty much one or two well-placed punches, and positive outcomes will follow if I maintain my composure.”

Prepared to exercise patience, McKinney is ready to go the full three rounds. However, he remains confident that he will secure a stoppage victory over Nelson at UFC Seattle.

“I’m ready to go the distance and perform for my community in the Pacific Northwest,” McKinney added. “Whether I achieve a first-round finish, or one in the second or third, I have the capabilities to end the fight early.”

Should McKinney defeat Nelson, he believes he will be firmly back in contention within the lightweight division and aims to conclude the year by facing a ranked opponent.

“I think this puts me in a strong position. One more victory, then a fight against a ranked contender,” McKinney concluded.
