Vitor Belfort quickly ascended in the UFC, becoming a champion by the remarkably young age of 19.
However, `The Phenom` experienced his first professional setback when Randy Couture defeated him by TKO at UFC 7 in October 1997.
Belfort swiftly rebounded from this loss, securing an armbar submission victory against the lesser-known Joe Charles.
By October 1998, with a 5-1 record, the young Brazilian star faced a significant challenge against fellow UFC legend, Wanderlei Silva.

The Explosive Bout: Belfort vs. Silva
Wanderlei Silva, who also held a 5-1 professional record, was still in the early stages of his burgeoning MMA career.
Known as `The Axe Murderer,` Silva had already established a formidable reputation for his incredibly durable chin and advanced Muay Thai techniques.
While a victory for Belfort wasn`t entirely unexpected, the sheer speed and decisiveness of his win at UFC 8 transformed their encounter into a legendary moment.
The fight began cautiously, with Silva initiating pressure and attempting to connect with low leg kicks.
However, a critical error occurred at the 37-second mark when Silva mistakenly moved directly into Belfort`s powerful punching range.
The 21-year-old knockout specialist immediately seized the opportunity, unleashing a rapid barrage of strikes that propelled Silva across the UFC Octagon.
With Silva pinned against the cage, Belfort delivered a relentless series of short left hands, ultimately rendering his opponent unconscious.
In a mere 44 seconds, Belfort secured one of the most memorable and impactful victories of his illustrious, Hall of Fame-worthy MMA career.
The Unfulfilled Rematch: Belfort vs. Silva II
Despite their long and storied careers, accumulating a combined 92 professional fights, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva never had a rematch in MMA.
A boxing rematch between the two veterans was recently scheduled in Brazil. However, that event saw a dramatic turn when Silva was knocked out cold during a post-fight altercation involving the team of his substitute opponent, Acelino Freitas.
Silva was disqualified from the bout after committing repeated fouls against Freitas, a former two-time world boxing champion, who had replaced Belfort after he withdrew due to two concussions sustained in training.
Skeptical of Belfort`s reasons for withdrawal, Silva has nevertheless expressed strong interest in rescheduling their highly anticipated rematch for 2026.
“This fight is scheduled for next year,” Silva stated last month, anticipating a future showdown.
“And that time, I hope he doesn’t run,” he added, a clear challenge to his old rival.
