Acelino Freitas, who recently faced Wanderlei Silva in a high-profile bout, has formally apologized for his involvement in the chaotic post-fight altercation that ultimately left the legendary MMA fighter unconscious.
Despite entering the ring with a substantial 44-pound weight disadvantage against the renowned MMA figure Silva, Freitas, a former two-time boxing world champion, maintained dominance throughout the match. However, Silva, the former PRIDE champion, began employing unsportsmanlike tactics, leading to point deductions for headbutting.
The situation escalated into complete pandemonium in the fourth round when Silva was disqualified. Members from both corners immediately swarmed into the ring, igniting an all-out brawl. Tragically, the melee culminated with one of Freitas`s sons striking the MMA veteran, rendering him unconscious. This alarming incident resulted in the 49-year-old Silva`s urgent hospitalization.
Acelino Freitas Issues Public Apology for Post-Fight Mayhem
Following the widely publicized brawl involving Wanderlei Silva, Acelino `Popo` Freitas took to social media to clarify his stance. In a comprehensive statement shared on his Instagram, which garnered millions of views, Freitas conveyed profound regret and offered a sincere apology to his opponent, despite the fierce and contentious nature of their encounter.
“Wanderlei`s disqualification stemmed from flagrant foul play and illegal, anti-sports strikes within the quad, where it was strictly a one-on-one contest. Prior to that, he had already delivered numerous illicit blows throughout the preceding rounds.”
Freitas further asserted, “[Silva] lacked the emotional control necessary to conduct a clean boxing match and see it through to its conclusion. The outcome is unequivocal: the Spaten Fight Night belt is now unequivocally mine!”
“Once again, I express my deep regret for the unfortunate episodes that unfolded after the match. I reaffirm my categorical condemnation and previous objections against all attempts by the opposing team to manipulate or distort information.”
Concluding his statement, `Popo` declared, “Ultimately, the sport of boxing stands paramount: respect, discipline, and truth will always prevail. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all for your unwavering support. This hard-won conquest belongs to every one of us!”
