Why Justin Gaethje Deserves Ilia Topuria Title Fight Over Paddy Pimblett, According to a UFC Peer

Justin Gaethje is strongly positioning himself for the next shot at Ilia Topuria`s UFC Lightweight Championship, making it clear he`s not interested in facing other contenders at the moment.

A veteran in the top lightweight ranks and a former BMF titleholder, Gaethje feels he is overdue for a title opportunity, particularly after missing out on facing Topuria at UFC 317, where Charles Oliveira got the nod instead. Gaethje has even suggested retirement if the fight with champion Topuria doesn`t materialize, a stance UFC CEO Dana White publicly labeled “whacky.”

While Gaethje remains a primary candidate, rising contenders like Arman Tsarukyan and the popular Paddy Pimblett are also in the championship conversation. Pimblett has history with Topuria, and Tsarukyan recently positioned himself by serving as a backup fighter for a recent main event.

Dan Hooker Argues Gaethje is the More Profitable Opponent for UFC Title Fight

Despite Paddy Pimblett`s significant fanbase, particularly in the UK and on social media, fellow lightweight Dan Hooker believes Justin Gaethje represents a better business decision for the UFC for Topuria`s first defense.

Hooker points out that North American pay-per-view sales are the most critical metric for the UFC. He argues that while Pimblett is popular, Gaethje has a proven ability to “move the needle” and generate significant buys in the North American market. Gaethje`s reputation as one of the most exciting fighters and his potential stylistic matchup against Topuria – particularly his heavy leg kicks vs. Topuria`s boxing – also contribute to his appeal.

“I think they`ll do Gaethje,” Hooker stated on Submission Radio. “The only pay-per-view sales that really count are in the North American market… For sure, Justin Gaethje moves the needle in North America. So, I think that he probably makes the UFC the most money by being champion.”

Justin Gaethje Stands Firm on Title Contention

Gaethje was initially scheduled to fight Dan Hooker earlier this year, a bout that could have solidified his title contention. However, the fight was canceled when Hooker suffered a broken hand. Gaethje stayed on the card and defeated Rafael Fiziev in a replacement bout.

Since then, Gaethje has been vocal about his expectation for a title shot, feeling his consistent performance and standing in the division warrant the opportunity.

“I`m the most consistent guy,” Gaethje said on The Makeshift Podcast, arguing for his turn. He added, referencing the canceled fight: “[Oliveira] is 2-2, I`m 3-1. I mean, what do you want me to do? Not my fault [Dan] Hooker dropped out…”

Gaethje remains committed to fighting for the UFC but insists he will not compromise his legacy by taking fights he feels are beneath his current standing while waiting for the championship opportunity.
