Oleksandr Usyk Responds to Critics Over Rico Verhoeven Fight and Controversial WBC Title
The highly anticipated fight scheduled for May 23rd in Egypt, featuring former undisputed Ukrainian cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) against Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, has stirred a mixed reaction within the boxing community. The decision by the WBC to put a title on the line for this crossover bout, in particular, ignited a storm of criticism.
In an interview with British media, Oleksandr Usyk spoke about the upcoming contest and addressed the backlash from the boxing world.
"What people say – I don't hear"
Reporter: You have an upcoming fight against Rico. This was a surprise to us. How did it all come about?
Usyk: Listen, this is a real fight. He’s a dangerous guy, he’s an absolute kickboxing champion, he’s a big guy. For many, it's 50% show and 50% fight. For me, it’s 100% fight, because I approach my training and fight plan very seriously. Many people want a show. Okay, no problem. You want a show – I’ll give it to you.
Reporter: Before the pyramids.
Usyk: Yes, because now there are several groups of fans: boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, UFC. For me, life is a real game, but I know I have an end, and that end is death. But right now, I pray, I go.
Reporter: Do you understand the criticism from people regarding the WBC title being on the line for this fight? People understand your fight, but they question the WBC title.
Usyk: For me, only my training camp matters. What people say – I don't hear. I don't read the news, I don't use Instagram. I train, I pray, I communicate with my team, and I eat. Oh, and sometimes I play Counter-Strike.
Usyk also reiterated his promise to make Joshua a world champion again.
