Carlos Prates, fresh off a two-fight knockout streak, is confident that a victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Perth this weekend will propel him directly into a title contention fight.
Prates, who has finished both of his recent opponents, is now setting his sights on a potential showdown with the winner of the anticipated welterweight championship bout.
Islam Makhachev is reportedly slated to defend his 170-pound title in August against Ian Machado Garry, according to insider reports.
Following his fight at UFC Perth, Prates expressed his desire to face the winner of the Makhachev vs. Garry clash. Notably, Prates holds a personal history with Garry, having suffered his first UFC loss to “The Future” last year on short notice.
Now, Prates is eager for a rematch with Garry, ideally in Brazil, a venue that both fighters have reportedly agreed to.
During UFC Perth Media Day, Prates shared his perspective:
“I believe Islam and Ian are scheduled to fight in August, and I will face the victor. Islam is currently considered the GOAT. He holds championship titles in two divisions and possesses formidable wrestling, making him a difficult opponent.”
In further remarks to MMA Junkie, Prates reiterated his ambition:
“I will be next in line after August. Islam is expected to fight Ian at UFC 330, and I will then challenge the winner of that bout.”
Prates’ confidence stems from his current form and his clear strategic vision for his career progression within the welterweight division.
