Conor McGregor’s representative has indicated that significant efforts were made to schedule a comeback fight for the Irish fighter against Michael Chandler. However, it appears the UFC is currently not prioritizing this particular matchup.
McGregor is now set to face Max Holloway in a welterweight rematch, headlining UFC 329 on July 11.
Meanwhile, Michael Chandler is slated to compete on a special White House card on June 14, facing the formidable Brazilian striker Mauricio Ruffy.
Conor McGregor’s Manager Encourages Fans Not to Give Up Hope on a Future “Notorious” vs. “Iron” Bout
In a recent interview, Conor McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar, revealed that McGregor strongly desired to fight Michael Chandler for his return. Attar explained that McGregor felt Chandler deserved the opportunity, especially after the events of 2024, including their time as opposing coaches on TUF 31, a subsequent training camp, an injury, and the eventual cancellation of their scheduled UFC 303 bout.
Attar stated that while the UFC did not see the immediate sense in booking the fight at that time, he believes it could still materialize in the future. He expressed well wishes for Chandler’s upcoming fight and hopes for his success.
Attar further elaborated that their team’s initial focus was on securing the Chandler fight. However, other options emerged during negotiations. He acknowledged Max Holloway’s eagerness to fight McGregor again, noting their past encounter at featherweight. Attar also pointed out that fighting at welterweight (170 lbs) made sense for McGregor’s return after a prolonged absence.
The anticipated bout between McGregor and Chandler was originally planned for UFC 303 but was postponed due to McGregor’s withdrawal due to injury. Both fighters had publicly expressed their intention to face each other at the White House event, but the UFC ultimately decided on different matchups.
