Ilia Topuria Reportedly Wants Arman Tsarukyan Next After Justin Gaethje Fight

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria is reportedly expressing a strong desire to face top contender Arman Tsarukyan next. This comes as a shift in Topuria’s stance, as he previously showed no interest in fighting the Armenian fighter. Tsarukyan had called out Topuria after his submission victory over Dan Hooker at UFC Qatar last year, but Topuria had then indicated he would vacate his title rather than fight him.

Ilia Topuria Eyes Arman Tsarukyan for Next Lightweight Title Defense

Following his highly anticipated title unification bout against interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, Ilia Topuria intends to defend his championship against Arman Tsarukyan. Topuria is confident of a first-round knockout victory against Gaethje. In a recent interview, Topuria confirmed his interest in facing Tsarukyan, suggesting it would be an “undeniable” title defense if he emerges victorious against Gaethje. This potential matchup sets the stage for a significant clash, with the possibility of a fight against Islam Makhachev also on the horizon.

Following the June 14th fight, Topuria faces a decision: either continue as lightweight king or move up to welterweight to challenge for the title against Islam Makhachev. He has also expressed interest in a potential fight against Conor McGregor, should McGregor win his comeback bout against Max Holloway in July.

Meanwhile, Arman Tsarukyan has been officially named the backup fighter for the Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje main event, a role that signifies his standing in the division. Despite past instances where his actions might have hindered his path to a title shot, being selected as a backup indicates progress. If the upcoming title fight proceeds without incident, Tsarukyan could very well be the next in line for a lightweight championship opportunity by the end of the year, potentially facing Topuria in a prime-time showdown.
