Khamzat Chimaev Not Pursuing Light Heavyweight Move, Focuses on Sean Strickland Rematch

Top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan has confirmed that Khamzat Chimaev has no immediate plans to move up to the light heavyweight division (205 pounds).

Despite an initial inclination to change weight classes following his recent title loss at UFC 328, Chimaev, according to his close friend and training partner Tsarukyan, has since reconsidered. Chimaev is now reportedly determined to secure a rematch with Sean Strickland to regain his former glory.

Speaking on the JAXXON Podcast, Tsarukyan stated that Chimaev is more motivated than ever and has decided to postpone his aspirations of becoming a two-division UFC champion to focus on facing Strickland again.

“Khamzat wants the rematch. He’s mentally prepared and more motivated than before.”

While Chimaev is eager for an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland, the current two-time UFC middleweight champion has a different perspective.

Chimaev is reportedly aiming to fight Strickland in October in Abu Dhabi and has already begun training after his UFC 328 loss. However, Strickland, after reclaiming the middleweight title, suggested to Full Send MMA that Chimaev needs to secure a couple of victories before being considered for another title shot.

“As always, you get a couple of wins, and I’ll see you again. That’s how it works. I truly believe ranking systems matter in the UFC, and when they don’t, it devalues the sport. So, get a couple of wins, and I’ll see you again.”
