Merab Dvalishvili, the former UFC bantamweight champion, admitted that medical professionals advised him to withdraw from his anticipated rematch against Petr Yan at UFC 323. Despite this recommendation, “The Machine” was determined to proceed with the fight.
The path to UFC 323 was particularly challenging for Dvalishvili. Having already undergone three difficult weight cuts in 2025, his fourth cut ahead of the Yan fight was deemed ill-advised by doctors, especially considering his age at the time (34). Furthermore, undisclosed issues during his training camp led the UFC’s medical team to suggest he pull out of the bout.
However, Dvalishvili’s mindset is one of embracing challenges. In a recent interview with Shakiel Mahjouri, he stated, “I like to take challenges. I like to take risks. That’s what I am. That’s what got me here. I knew already. During the training camp [for UFC 323], there were some issues. UFC doctors told me that I can pull out. But that’s who I am. I do not want to make excuses. I like to deal with challenges. I had worse situations before some fights, and I still made it through and won.”
Despite ultimately falling short in the rematch, Dvalishvili showcased his characteristic relentless pace, engaging Yan for five rounds with constant takedown attempts and even exchanging strikes.
The UFC has reportedly assured Dvalishvili of a title rematch once Petr Yan is ready. The trilogy fight is anticipated for the third quarter of 2026, aiming to definitively settle their 1-1 rivalry.
