Justin Gaethje Dethrones Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250, Prompting Reactions

Justin Gaethje has ended Ilia Topuria’s reign as the UFC lightweight champion, securing a TKO victory in the main event of UFC Freedom 250. Gaethje, a significant underdog entering the bout, defied expectations by employing a strategic game plan. He effectively utilized his jab to disrupt Topuria’s rhythm, neutralizing the challenger’s predicted early knockout and control.

While Topuria showed resilience and landed powerful body shots in the second round, even taking the fight to the ground, Gaethje demonstrated incredible durability to survive the onslaught. The third round was a dominant performance by Gaethje, who, guided by coach Trevor Wittman, executed a flawless strategy. His precise jabs and feints battered Topuria’s face, significantly impairing his vision by the end of the round.

Despite the visible damage and the potential for a doctor’s stoppage, Topuria elected to continue. In the fourth round, Gaethje continued to assert his dominance, landing sharper strikes and controlling the pace. By the fifth round, Topuria’s corner recognized he could no longer continue due to the accumulated punishment, leading to the TKO stoppage and Gaethje’s crowning as the undisputed lightweight champion.

MMA Community Reacts to Gaethje’s Upset Victory

The MMA world erupted with reactions following Justin Gaethje’s decisive win. Fellow contender Arman Tsarukyan, who stood to benefit financially from Gaethje’s victory, posted a jab at Topuria, implying he “quit” and questioned the extended recovery time given to Topuria after the third round.

Conor McGregor, ever the showman, commented on Gaethje’s past loss to Max Holloway before celebrating the new champion and his own involvement in the fight business. Jake Paul also took shots at Topuria, calling him a “hoe for quitting” and deeming him not worth sparring.

Islam Makhachev offered a more measured response, emphasizing the levels in the sport and congratulating Gaethje on a well-deserved championship. Other notable figures like Brian Ortega, Henry Cejudo, Terrance McKinney, Alex Volkanovski, Rafael dos Anjos, Francis Ngannou, Jamahal Hill, Max Holloway, Dan Ige, Kevin Holland, Miesha Tate, Gilbert Burns, Jiri Prochazka, Paulo Costa, Sean O’Malley, Jean Silva, Belal Muhammad, Ariel Helwani, Giorgi Kokiashvili, and Corey Anderson also shared their amazement and congratulations for “The Highlight’s” performance.
