Following his split-decision loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 328, Khamzat Chimaev has publicly voiced his suspicion that the judges’ decision was influenced by nationality. Chimaev, who was controversially defeated by Strickland, suggested that the American judges favored their compatriot.
During the fight, Chimaev deviated from his typical wrestling-heavy strategy to engage in a striking battle with Strickland. Despite landing more shots and controlling the pace for significant portions of the bout, the judges ultimately scored the fight in favor of the American.
In a now-deleted tweet, Chimaev questioned the fairness of the decision, stating, “All judges are Americans, the organization is American, the opponent is American and one is Chechen. It’s a close fight, who do you think will win? 😂”
Chimaev has also issued a stern warning to Strickland, expressing his eagerness for a rematch and his determination to win the middleweight title back. “I’m waiting tell me when you’re ready @SStricklandMMA Next time somebody has to be dead,” he posted. He further added, “No excuses, I just wanna f*ck him up. This sh*t trying to run away.”
While Chimaev is pushing for an immediate rematch, Sean Strickland has indicated that Chimaev will need to secure a few more victories before earning another title shot. Strickland is currently recovering from a broken nose and a shoulder injury, expected to keep him sidelined for three to four months. Chimaev and his team are reportedly targeting a potential October rematch in Abu Dhabi.
