Tom Aspinall Signs with Eddie Hearn: UFC Champ Explains Matchroom Move
UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall has revealed the reasons behind his decision to sign with boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, a move that comes amidst Hearn's ongoing public dispute with Dana White.
Despite recent backlash and criticism from fans and fellow fighters regarding the disappointing conclusion to his UFC 321 title defense, Aspinall, the interim UFC Heavyweight Champion, remains focused on his career. He awaits clarity regarding the undisputed heavyweight title picture.
During his hiatus, Aspinall acknowledged a shift in public support and has opted to prioritize his personal career growth over public appeasement. To maximize his remaining time in combat sports and expand his off-fight business ventures, he transitioned from being managed by his father to signing with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Talent Agency.
The timing of this agreement surprised many, especially given Hearn's well-publicized conflict with UFC President Dana White. Nevertheless, Aspinall stated his belief that now is the opportune moment for such representation and elaborated on his choice of the renowned boxing promoter.
Aspinall explained his decision, stating, "We've met almost every MMA representative, be it a manager, commercial advisor, or athlete agent. We've had numerous discussions, but there's something unique about Eddie, Frank, and their entire team. Sometimes, you spend time with people and just get a good feeling—they're truly my kind of people."
He added, "I felt an instant connection and trust. It's hard to explain, but like many experiences in life, sometimes you just click with people, and that's exactly what happened with us, and it works."
Having achieved championship status within the octagon, Aspinall's focus has evolved from solely pursuing legacy to maximizing his financial earnings during what he considers the later phase of his career.
He views Eddie Hearn as the ideal partner to provide business advice and help him achieve this financial goal.
Expressing his satisfaction, Aspinall stated, "I'm very content with this arrangement and thrilled to be part of Matchroom, working with Eddie, Frank, and the entire team." He clarified that the partnership aims to expand his team's media and commercial capabilities, noting his current team is small. "Eddie and Matchroom will serve as my commercial advisors, offering guidance. My father remains my manager, as he has been from the start and will be until the end. However, if Eddie's expertise is needed, we'll bring him in." He concluded by contrasting his ambition with other fighters: "Some UFC fighters don't prioritize wins or losses; they just want to fight and get paid, which is fine for them. But my goal is to maximize my earnings, so I'm exploring every available opportunity."
