Movsar Evloev has indicated that he is set to challenge the current two-time UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, for the title this summer.
Volkanovski, who last successfully defended his championship against Diego Lopes in a rematch at UFC 325, has reportedly informed the UFC of his intention to face the undefeated Evloev in August or September.
Following his victory over Lopes, Volkanovski (“The Great”) signed a new contract with the UFC and has expressed no immediate plans for retirement.
While there were prior rumors suggesting Jean Silva might be next in line for a title shot, Evloev’s impressive performance against Lerone Murphy at UFC London appears to have significantly impressed the UFC’s matchmakers, positioning him as the frontrunner.
Volkanovski himself has stated after his last bout that he intends to face only deserving top contenders and is against fast-tracking or gifting title opportunities.
Evloev recently took to X (formerly Twitter), hinting at his upcoming title challenge: “End of the summer, and new Inshallah.”
Alexander Volkanovski Challenges Movsar Evloev’s Wrestling Prowess
Earlier this year, in an interview with UFC on Paramount+, Volkanovski expressed his desire to test himself against formidable undefeated contenders like Movsar Evloev and aimed to end Evloev’s undefeated record. He sent a clear message to the 32-year-old Russian fighter.
Volkanovski insisted that if Evloev faces him, the challenger should employ all his skills to attempt to dethrone him, making it clear he does not want any post-fight excuses about the challenger not utilizing their full arsenal, such as striking.
During the same interview, the Australian champion also encouraged Evloev to attempt takedowns, stating, “I won’t let it happen.”
Evloev, however, is confident that he will not need to rely on his wrestling to defeat Volkanovski. Responding to the champion’s challenge, he posted on X: “I’ll never make excuses. I truly don’t believe I need wrestling to beat you.”
