Jai Opetaia's Team Prepares Lawsuit Against IBF Over Stripped Title
The International Boxing Federation (IBF) recently announced its decision to strip cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) of his title. This move by the organization appears to be a clear message to boxers who are currently involved with, or plan to pursue careers in, Dana White's Zuffa project.
Opetaia's Manager: "They're Delusional"
Opetaia's team asserts that there was no legal justification for revoking the boxer's title. They highlight that the IBF had initially approved Opetaia's fight against Brandon Glanton, a bout that also featured a Zuffa title, and even collected sanctioning fees for it. Despite this, the IBF unexpectedly reversed its decision. Opetaia's camp suspects foul play, alleging collusion, and plans to release evidence, likely comprising related communications.
Mick Francis, Opetaia's manager, confirmed that they are gearing up to file a lawsuit against the IBF. "If they believe we will simply accept their ruling, they are mistaken. We will absolutely take them to court. Jai poured immense effort into earning this belt; he shed blood and broke bones for it," Francis declared.
Earlier, Dana White himself had hinted at the possibility of legal action against the IBF.
The IBF has a history of controversy, having been entangled in a corruption scandal in 1999 where its then-president, Bobby Lee, was accused of extortion for demanding bribes to sanction fights.
