Francis Ngannou: Alex Pereira Faces Significant Challenge Against Ciryl Gane

Francis Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, has voiced his opinion that Alex Pereira could encounter substantial difficulties in his upcoming heavyweight debut against Ciryl Gane.

Pereira is scheduled to face Gane for the interim heavyweight title at UFC Freedom 250, which will take place on June 14 at the White House in Washington, D.C. This bout marks Pereira’s first venture into the heavyweight division.

Alex Pereira has experienced a rapid ascent in combat sports, establishing an impressive record within just 12 UFC appearances. In less than two years, he made history by becoming the ninth fighter in the promotion’s history to hold titles in two different weight classes, securing both the middleweight and light heavyweight championships.

At 38 years old, the Brazilian fighter is on the verge of achieving another significant milestone. A victory over Gane would position him as the first fighter to ever win UFC titles in three distinct weight categories. Many observers and fans believe his formidable striking power makes this achievement a strong possibility.

However, Francis Ngannou offers a different perspective. Ngannou, who has previously defeated Ciryl Gane, suggests that Alex Pereira might struggle to secure a win at the White House event.

Francis Ngannou Believes Ciryl Gane Presents Major Obstacles for Alex Pereira

During a recent interview with Helen Yee, in anticipation of his own MMA return against Philipe Lins at the MVP MMA card on May 16, Francis Ngannou shared his analysis of the Alex Pereira versus Ciryl Gane matchup.

While acknowledging Pereira’s capabilities, Ngannou predicted that Gane’s style could pose significant problems for the former two-division champion, especially as he moves up to a heavier weight class.

“I think Ciryl has more tools, and then Alex Pereira has his own style. Ciryl Gane has his own style,” Ngannou stated. “For me, and I might be wrong, but it’s not a good matchup for Alex Pereira in terms of style, basically if he’s moving up to the division and has to face a heavyweight who is even lighter on his feet.”

Pereira’s last fight was at UFC 320 in October, where he achieved a first-round knockout victory over Magomed Ankalaev to regain the light heavyweight title. His UFC record stands at 10-2, with notable wins against Jiri Prochazka, Israel Adesanya, and Khalil Rountree Jr.

Ciryl Gane is coming off a no-contest ruling from his title bout against heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall at UFC 321 in October. An accidental eye poke by Gane rendered Aspinall unable to continue. Gane’s UFC record is 10-2 with one no-contest, including victories over Derrick Lewis, Sergey Spivak, and Tai Tuivasa.
