Shavkat Rakhmonov’s Impending Return to the Octagon?

After a significant period sidelined due to a knee injury, it appears the return of Shavkat Rakhmonov to active competition is drawing nearer.

For an extended duration, Shavkat Rakhmonov was widely regarded as a formidable threat in the welterweight division. His performances were consistently dominant. However, an injury sustained by Belal Muhammad, who was slated to face him for the world title, prevented Rakhmonov from making his championship bid.

Subsequently, Rakhmonov himself began experiencing injury issues. After re-aggravating an existing problem, he was removed from competition indefinitely. Uncertainty loomed regarding his future return. Fortunately, recent training footage has emerged, suggesting a return to active duty for Rakhmonov.

The central question remains: where does Shavkat Rakhmonov fit into the current welterweight landscape?

The Return of Shavkat Rakhmonov

A primary challenge Rakhmonov will face is the increased depth and competitiveness of the welterweight division during his absence. While he was once a top contender, this is no longer the case.

Ian Machado Garry appears to be on the cusp of securing a title shot against Islam Makhachev. Additionally, fighters like Carlos Prates, Michael Morales, and Sean Brady are all coming off significant victories. Logistically, it makes sense for Rakhmonov to be positioned within this group.

Conversely, some may argue that Rakhmonov has earned another title shot based on his previous victory over Machado Garry. However, an extended layoff typically necessitates proving oneself against elite competition at 170 pounds to regain momentum and shake off any “ring rust.”

Prepare yourselves, as this already highly competitive division could become even more dynamic in the coming months.
