Dana White Defends Booking Assistant Sal Everett for Contender Series
UFC President Dana White has defended the decision to include his longtime assistant, Sal Everett, in a forthcoming bout on "Dana White's Contender Series" (DWCS). White drew a parallel between Everett and rising boxing talent Callum Walsh, highlighting a similar early career stage where individuals might feel like outsiders but are ultimately judged on their merit.
Traditionally, White is unfamiliar with most DWCS fighters until they enter the octagon. However, he will be in a distinct position on October 6th, observing from cageside as Sal Everett, who has held various roles including a runner for the UFC's production team in Las Vegas, competes against the undefeated Ozzy Martin in the middleweight division.
This appearance marks a unique homecoming for Everett. Despite their professional relationship, White insists Everett will be evaluated like any other aspiring fighter vying for a UFC contract. "He is a great kid, and everybody in this company loves him," White stated in a recent media scrum at the UFC Apex. He added, "I feel bad for whoever he’s fighting. He’s gonna feel like he’s coming into enemy territory, when that is not the case."
White elaborated on the comparison to Callum Walsh, saying, "You come in here and, if Sal’s good enough, then he’s gonna make it, and he’s gonna get a contract. If he’s not, then he’s gotta figure out what he’s gonna do next." Everett's professional MMA record boasts four first-round finishes, including a remarkably fast four-second knockout in January.
