Islam Makhachev Hints at Usman Nurmagomedov's Likely UFC Signing, Shutting Down PFL Future

Usman Nurmagomedov, the reigning lightweight champion of the Professional Fighters League (PFL), appears to be nearing the end of his contract with the promotion. Having recently declined the PFL's reported initial offer of $2 million to re-sign, Nurmagomedov has fueled speculation about a potential move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

As a cousin to UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov and a teammate of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, Usman Nurmagomedov's entry into the UFC's highly competitive lightweight division would undoubtedly make him a significant contender.

Despite the possibility of a UFC signing, the PFL could still present a lucrative offer to retain Nurmagomedov. However, Islam Makhachev recently expressed skepticism about this scenario, suggesting it's unlikely.

Makhachev's Confidence in Nurmagomedov's UFC Transition

In a recent interview with Match TV, when asked about the probability of Nurmagomedov joining the UFC, Makhachev estimated a 90% chance of the move materializing. He emphasized that this step is crucial for Nurmagomedov to prove himself as the world's best fighter and to quickly pursue a title shot against top-ranked opponents.

"It’s the perfect move for him; he needs to prove he’s the best in the world. He could face a top-10 rival and soon earn a title shot," Makhachev stated. "He grew up alongside Khabib and me, has trained with the best from the start of his career and has extensive experience working with champions; now is the best time for him to join the UFC."

Currently, Nurmagomedov remains a free agent, but his UFC debut could be imminent in the coming weeks. He was recently seen supporting his teammate Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai.
