Patchy Mix Explains Dramatic Weight Cut Failure Due to Illness Before RIZIN 54
Patchy Mix, a former Bellator bantamweight champion, has revealed that illness derailed his weight cut, causing him to miss the contracted weight by a considerable 6.2 pounds ahead of his RIZIN 54 bout against Shoko Sato.
Once considered a top pound-for-pound contender, Mix's career has faced recent challenges. After a successful run in Bellator, his highly anticipated move to the UFC resulted in a disappointing 0-2 record. He has since signed with RIZIN, where he lost his promotional debut to Kyoma Akimoto in March.
The upcoming fight at RIZIN 54 was intended to be a turning point to end a three-fight losing streak. However, the significant weight miss marks the first time in Mix's professional career that he has failed to make weight.
Mix took to social media to address the situation:
"Very sorry to my opponent, the boss, and Rizin fans," Mix stated. "As I got sick towards the end of my weight cut for my category. I am grateful that he still accepted the bout under these circumstances. Much respect, but now I have to focus on putting on the best match for the Japanese fans tonight."
Mix's last official victory was a split decision win over Magomed Magomedov at Bellator in May 2024, though this result was later overturned due to a failed drug test.
