GB Boxers Guaranteed Three Medals at Europeans
Great Britain is assured of at least three medals at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria. Chantelle Reid, Damar Thomas, and Abdul Burton have all reached the semi-finals.
Reid, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, decisively won her women's light-middleweight match 5-0 against Evelyn Igharo of Ireland. She will now face Serbia's Milena Matovic in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Thomas, 21, also secured a 5-0 victory in his men's super-heavyweight bout against Georgia's Nikoloz Begadze. He is set to compete against Mahammad Abdullayev from Azerbaijan in the next round.
The 20-year-old Burton defeated home favourite and Olympic bronze medallist Javier Ibanez with a 3-2 scoreline, earning him a semi-final match against Turkey's Semih Gumus. Burton stated, "Sometimes you have got to dig in and when things went against me I had to get stuck in and show who I was. I am young, hungry and here to take over."
Lauren Mackie, Amy Broadhurst, Callum Makin, and Oladimeji Shittu are scheduled for quarter-final bouts on Wednesday. However, more than half of Britain's 15-strong squad has been eliminated.
Earlier on Tuesday, flyweight Ruby White lost her match 3-2 to Turkey's Olympic silver medallist Hatice Akbas. Emily Asquith was defeated 5-0 in her light-heavyweight contest by Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke. In the men's heavyweight division, Commonwealth Games champion Isaac Okoh was beaten 3-0 by Germany's Kevin Lebowski.
