UFC light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg is reportedly facing a year-long layoff due to a torn ACL, as revealed by fellow contender Paulo Costa.
Ulberg claimed the light heavyweight title at UFC 327 by knocking out Jiri Prochazka. Remarkably, he sustained a significant knee injury early in the fight, struggling to remain on his feet at times during the first round.
Despite the injury, Ulberg managed to land a decisive blow, securing the victory and the championship. The extent of his recovery and when he might defend his new belt remains uncertain, especially given the recent history of title vacancies in the light heavyweight division.
Paulo Costa shared details about Ulberg’s situation in a recent interview:
“Carlos [Ulberg] is out for one year. I spoke with him in the lobby yesterday. He mentioned needing surgery and confirmed he’s sidelined.”
Costa has expressed his desire to be the next fighter to compete for the 205-pound title, regardless of whether it’s for a vacant or interim belt. While his recent impressive victory over Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 327 has bolstered his claim, some suggest he may need at least one more win before earning a title shot.
This injury is a significant setback for Ulberg, especially considering he managed to win the championship while battling a severe knee issue. The hope is that this injury won’t derail his promising career, which has seen him work diligently to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
While the light heavyweight division may not be the most stacked in the UFC, it is currently featuring a growing number of exciting prospects making their presence felt.
